Passage 140:00

The Impact of Urban Green Spaces

A. Modern cities are increasingly adopting green infrastructure solutions to mitigate the severe impact of urban heat islands. Traditional asphalt and dark brick rooftops absorb massive amounts of solar radiation, re-radiating heat into ambient city atmospheres during both peak daylight and twilight hours.

B. By integrating extensive vegetative covers, commonly referred to as green roofs, structural architects can introduce active biological systems capable of shading building surfaces and reducing ambient temperatures through evapotranspiration.

Permeable pavements reduce heat by allowing ________ to penetrate and evaporate.

How marking works

A score that comes with a reason

Writing and Speaking are marked automatically against the criteria of the band scale, with a comment on each criterion rather than a single number.

Speaking is transcribed before it is marked, so the feedback tracks what you actually said, down to word-level pronunciation notes. A teacher can review a marked attempt and adjust the score.

The four Writing criteria

Task Response
How fully and accurately the prompt is answered.
Coherence & Cohesion
Structure, the line of argument, and how ideas connect.
Lexical Resource
Range, accuracy and naturalness of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range & Accuracy
Variety of sentence structures and grammatical accuracy.

Speaking uses its own criteria, including Pronunciation. VSTEP and APTIS use their own scales.
